Sperm Donor Sued After Having 550+ Children
Jonathan Jacob Meijer is a Dutch sperm donor being sued to stop donating sperm after possibly fathering over 550 children. The main reason for the lawsuit is to prevent him from donating for a higher chance of his donor children committing incest.
Meijer is being sued by one of the mothers who he donated sperm, as well as Donorkind, which is a Dutch organization for children conceived using donated sperm.
In the lawsuit, Donorkind is alleging that Meijer donated to thirteen separate sperm banks, most of which are in the Netherlands, as well as communicating with prospective parents online using an alias.
Meijer has been placed on a Dutch donor blacklist based on a 2021 investigation by the New York Times. However, Meijer has continued to donate sperm in other countries, such as Denmark and Ukraine.
Meijer has gone far past the Dutch guidelines of not fathering more than 25 children or impregnating more than 12 different women. This guideline is built to prevent inbreeding among siblings. While there is no exact guideline for the United States, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine recommends no more than 25 births for a population of 850,000.
This civil lawsuit requests that Meijer be banned from new donations, stop communicating with prospective parents, and write to clinics storing his sperm that they destroy his sperm.
